ADP Integrations: Which One Should I Use?
Thoropass supports several ADP products. Because each is a distinct platform with a different setup process, it's important to select the correct integration before you begin. Using the wrong ADP integration will result in a failed or unusable connection.
How to Identify Your ADP Product:
If you... | You're likely on... |
Log into ADP at | |
Log into ADP at | |
Have a co-employment or PEO arrangement where ADP is the employer of record
Have ADP managing your HR and payroll operations on your behalf (outsourced), without a PEO/co-employment arrangement |
Not sure? Ask your HR or payroll team which ADP platform they log into, or check with your ADP account representative. You can also check the URL in your browser when logged into ADP — the subdomain typically identifies the product (e.g., run.adp.com vs. workforcenow.adp.com).
⚠️ If you previously tried to connect ADP Workforce Now and received a permissions error (such as "User must have access to: Setup > Tools > Support menu entry"), your company may actually be on ADP TotalSource or ADP Comprehensive Services. These are managed-service products and cannot be connected the same way as Run or Workforce Now.
ADP Integration Comparison:
Integration Guide | Who It's For | Connection Type | Estimated Time |
Small businesses on ADP's small business payroll platform | OAuth (automatic) | A few minutes
Mid-to-large companies managing their own HR/payroll | OAuth (automatic) | 15–30 minutes
Companies in a PEO/co-employment arrangement with ADP | Assisted (form-based) | Days to a few weeks
Companies using ADP as an outsourced HR/payroll provider | Assisted (form-based) | ~7 days |
Assisted vs. OAuth Connections:
OAuth: (ADP Run and ADP Workforce Now) Works like most integrations. You will log into your ADP account through Thoropass and authorize the connection. Setup takes as little as a few minutes to a few hours.
Assisted: (ADP TotalSource and ADP Comprehensive Services) Requires a multi-step authorization form process. This is because ADP's managed-service products require written authorization before granting third-party access. Setup takes days to weeks and involves your organization signing a form, Thoropass/Finch co-signing it, and your ADP representative processing it. During this time, the connection will show a pending or error status in Thoropass. This is expected.
