Before You Begin
ADP Workforce Now Cloud is not supported. If your company is on ADP Workforce Now Cloud, this integration is not available at this time.
If your company uses ADP through a PEO or co-employment arrangement (TotalSource), do not use this guide. Follow the ADP TotalSource guide instead.
If your company uses ADP Comprehensive Services, follow the ADP Comprehensive Services guide instead.
If your company uses ADP Administrative Services, contact your ADP account representative and ask them to add Thoropass as a 3rd Party Practitioner. Have them send the 'Add Admin' form to the email address displayed in the Thoropass connection window.
Not sure if you're on ADP Comprehensive Services? See here for help choosing the right integration - ADP Integrations: Which One Should I Use?
Requirements
You must be a Standard Practitioner in ADP Workforce Now with sufficient permissions to create new Standard Practitioner users.
Update frequency: ADP Workforce Now connection accounts update / refresh every 24 hours, thereafter.
Automatic Connection (Try First)
Log into the Thoropass App.
Select Settings, then Integrations.
Click +Browse Integrations.
Search for or scroll to ADP Workforce Now, then click Learn More.
Click Set Up Integration.
Enter a name to identify the connection account, then click Save.
In the connection window, click Connect.
Enter your ADP Workforce Now username and password, then click Connect.
If the automatic connection succeeds, setup is complete. If you receive an error, proceed to the manual setup steps below.
Manual Connection (If Automatic Fails)
Step 1: Add a New Standard Practitioner User
In ADP Workforce Now, navigate to Setup > Tools > Support.
Click Client Contact Change, then click the Add New Contact tile.
When asked if the contact is a registered employee or independent contractor, select No. Fill in the contact details using the values displayed in the Thoropass connection window:
First Name — Use the name shown in the connection window
Last Name — Support
E-mail Address — Use the email shown in the connection window
Phone Number — Use the phone number shown in the connection window
Scroll down to Access Settings and select No, let me choose the options manually. Configure the following:
Select Companies — Select all company codes you want to grant access to
Administrator Access — Select Product User from the dropdown
Product Access — Set Workforce Now access to Yes
Contact Settings & Roles — Select Payroll and ensure Secondary Contact is checked
Click Submit. The new user will receive a welcome email with login credentials.
Step 2: Assign the Standard Practitioner Role
Navigate to Setup > Security > Access Permissions > Manage People.
Search for the contact you just created and select their profile.
Click Manage Profile Memberships and confirm the user is assigned the Standard Practitioner role.
Click Save.
Step 3: Set Access Permissions
Apply only the level of access required for your use case:
Organization data only:
People Access tab — Set to View Only Access for all People
Payroll Processing Access tab — Set to No Access
Step 4: Enable Sensitive Personal Information Access
By default, Birth Dates and Tax IDs are masked in ADP Workforce Now. To ensure Thoropass can access this data:
Navigate to Setup > Security > Access Permissions > Manage Profiles.
Click Standard Practitioner.
In the top menu bar, select 2. Sensitive Personal Information.
Under Birth Date masking > On Screens, set to Partial Masking with Reveal and Edit.
Under Tax ID masking > On Screens, set to Partial Masking with Reveal and Edit.
Click Save.
Step 5: Complete the Connection in Thoropass
Return to the Thoropass connection window.
Enter the credentials for the new Standard Practitioner user.
Click Connect to complete the authorization.
Troubleshooting:
I receive a "User must have access to: Setup > Tools > Support menu entry" error.
This menu item may not exist in your ADP environment, which can indicate your company is on ADP TotalSource or ADP Comprehensive Services rather than standard Workforce Now. See ADP Integrations: Which One Should I Use? to confirm your product.
The new user didn't receive a welcome email.
Check that the email address entered matches exactly what was shown in the Thoropass connection window. If entered incorrectly, delete the contact and recreate it.
Birth Date or Tax ID fields are still masked after completing Step 4.
Confirm changes were saved and that the Standard Practitioner role was assigned in Step 2. Permissions may take a few minutes to propagate.
You see "Hang tight!" after the final step.
This is expected for first-time connections — Thoropass is finalizing the setup on the backend. The connection will appear under Settings, Integrations once it completes.
