Using a Proxy DNS for Trust Center Setup

Learn how to resolve Trust Center setup issues when using a proxy DNS service like Cloudflare.

If you are using a proxy DNS service (such as Cloudflare) with the same domain as your live production website, you may encounter issues during Trust Center setup.

Common Issues

  • The Trust Center setup continues spinning and does not complete.

  • Setup appears complete, but accessing the Trust Center results in a permissions denied error.

Why This Happens

Proxy services like Cloudflare intercept and route traffic before it reaches your DNS records. This can interfere with the CNAME verification and SSL certificate provisioning steps that Thoropass performs during Trust Center setup.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Temporarily disable the proxy for your Trust Center subdomain.

In Cloudflare (or your proxy provider), set the DNS record for your Trust Center subdomain (e.g., trust.yourcompany.com) to DNS only mode — not proxied. This allows Thoropass to complete domain validation without proxy interference.

  2. Complete the Trust Center domain setup in Thoropass.

Follow the steps in How to Set Up Your Custom Trust Center Domain. Ensure both CNAME records are saved and verified before clicking Activate Live Trust Center.

  3. Verify DNS propagation.

Use https://www.whatsmydns.net/ to confirm that your CNAME and ACME challenge records are publicly accessible.

  4. Re-enable the proxy (optional, after activation).

Once your Trust Center is active, you may attempt to re-enable the proxy. However, note that this may cause issues with SSL certificate auto-renewal. If problems recur, revert to DNS-only mode for the Trust Center subdomain.

If you continue to experience issues after following these steps, please contact support@thoropass.com or reach out to your CSM.
